JW Roars Against Hunger
Posted on 11/01/2018

JW will participate in a three-week challenge to raise awareness for food insecurity. During the challenge students, families, and staff will collect food and funds for various community groups, local food banks, and crisis centers in the Mercer County area.

November 5-21: There are three teams made up of 17 Community groups. The teams will challenge each other to collect the most food with the most spirit. The culminating event, the TIGER-THON, will take place on Wednesday, November 21st. Together as one community, JW will walk with pride and support for our neighbors in need. Parents are welcome to fill the bleachers and cheer their children on. More information on this event will follow.

In addition to the TIGER-THON, students will take part in hands on projects on the 21st. This will be a day that brings gratefulness unity and pride in support of our community!

Three Prizes will be awarded:
Prize 1: The team that collects the most food in the first week will enjoy a pretzel party at an upcoming Community meeting.
Prize 2: The team that collects the most food in the second week will enjoy a pretzel party at an upcoming Community meeting.
Prize 3: The team that has the most sponsorship and participation for the First Annual Tiger-Thon and collects the most food throughout the entire 2 and a half weeks will enjoy a pretzel party, homework passes, and a special dessert treat as a thank you!

The Ultimate Grand Prize: If JW collects 10,000 pounds of food and has 95% participation for the Tiger-Thon with amazing spirit and pride, students will experience a Spring Field Day with music, games, and treats as a special thank you for supporting our community!

JWMS will be collecting the following items:
Granola bars, cereal, oatmeal, canned fruit and veggies, beans, pasta, sauce, baby food, snack foods, apple sauce, cranberry sauce, stuffing, soup, spices, condiments, rice, boxed side dishes, boxed dessert, canned pumpkin, paper products (napkins, plates, cups), turkey gift cards, store gift cards, monetary donations (each dollar equals one pound/one item). Any non-perishable food items are greatly appreciated.

Special Note: Our community groups and local food banks are experiencing dangerous lows this year. Any help offered is greatly appreciated.

Please donate non-perishable food items to the Main Commons between November 5-21. Gift cards, monetary donations, and turkey gift cards can be given directly to Mrs. Riely, room B104, with your team’s number on it.

As always, John Witherspoon Middle School thanks everyone for joining in our continued effort to raise awareness of food insecurity in and around the area.
